Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is a 5v5 MOBA developed and published by Moonton, first released in July 2016. Matches typically last around ten minutes, and there's no pay-to-win stat progression: winners are decided by skill, teamwork and strategy. The fastest way to improve is to understand roles and lanes.

The objective

Two teams of five fight to destroy the enemy base. To get there, you have to break through turrets: each lane has three, and you need to clear at least one lane before you can hit the base. Minions spawn constantly and march down each lane, so use them to tank turret shots.

The three lanes and the jungle

  • Gold Lane — farms gold fastest. Usually home to your Marksman.
  • EXP Lane — gains experience fastest. Usually a Fighter who can hold their own one-on-one.
  • Mid Lane — the shortest route between bases. Usually a Mage who rotates to help other lanes.
  • The Jungle — the areas between lanes, full of neutral creeps that give gold, experience and buffs.

The gold and EXP lanes swap sides depending on whether you start on the blue or red side of the map.

The six roles

Role What they do
Tank Absorbs damage, starts fights and protects carries
Fighter Durable damage dealer who wins duels, usually in the EXP lane
Assassin High mobility and burst; hunts squishy targets, often from the jungle
Mage Magic damage and crowd control; usually mid lane
Marksman Ranged damage that scales into the late game; usually gold lane
Support Heals, shields and utility to keep the team alive

The standard team composition

Most competitive drafts settle on one hero per position:

  1. Gold laner (Marksman)
  2. EXP laner (Fighter)
  3. Mid laner (Mage)
  4. Jungler (Assassin or Fighter)
  5. Roamer (Tank or Support), who moves between lanes to protect teammates and secure vision

Learn one hero for each of two positions. Flexibility in draft is worth more than a third main.

Builds: equipment and emblems

Every hero can be customised with equipment bought during the match and emblems chosen before it. Matching your build to your role, such as defence for roamers and penetration for assassins, matters as much as mechanics.

Where to go next

Once you're comfortable, read up on ranks and game modes, then study the latest patch notes to see which heroes are strong right now.
